Ceramics 2 Final

The place setting project was my most successful project. Our objective was to "copy" and artist's work and put it onto our place setting, which included 2 bowls and 2 plates. THe pictures above are one completed plate and one bowl that was in the process of glazing. I chose the artist Mondrion, who typically utilizes lines. I made a plaid looking pattern and each square was filled in with a different shade of a color, each piece of the set was based on a different color. I believe that this was my most successful project because i spent the most time on it. Also i had to overcome some adversity making this because I had made a very good bowl and i came back the next day to find it destroyed. I was genuinely excited when i first saw them all come out of the kiln glazed. They looked awesome, the different shades of each color was my best idea. Since I spent a lot of time on it i perfected it in the best way i could.
I believe that i overcame the most obstacles with my first project; 2 cups and 2 bowls. THis was probably the hardest for m because they were the first things that i had ever thrown. I struggled with centering and bringing it up, but now i'm a "pro". Coming into the class I had no previous experience so just making a simple bowl was very hard to do. I think i had a little beginner's luck with my first mug but then the 3 other pieces were very difficult. They made me become a better artist because they made me work very hard to to the basics. Looking back i wish all I had to make was bowls and cups because they are very easy. I took risks making this by just simply trying to bring them up and make them taller. I overcame many obstacles with this project that helped me to start every other project.
My large lidded jar and my teapot are the two pieces that show my growth the most. At the beginning of the semester i wasn't able to bring up my cup above 4 inches, and now i can get it up to about 8-9 inches. Also I had no clue on how to create a lid, but now i can do it successfully. The jar was also my favorite project to do because i love bringing things up and smoothing them out. My teapot final also shows my growth because before i never used to add anything to any of my projects and with this I added a large tree. Also it taught me how to make a different type of lid. When i glazed it I had to get in all the tiny places which also helped me get better. The teapot made me struggle a little bit too because i had to figure out how to do a spout. Overall my teapot and jars showed my growth the most.

Your new teaching method is very helpful to us. It gives us more freedom and it forces us to be more creative. Continuing this method in the years to come would be very beneficial to students. Forcing us to be more to be creative will challenge us, but challenging us is what it's all about. It makes us better artists. For example: in ceramics 2 you gave us a project where we could choose 3 things to do on our own. For those projects students were able to create anything of their choosing, also pinterest is one thing that helps us get some ideas. Pinterest works for some people, but some don't like to use it to get ideas. Blogs are the same way, they work for some but not most. I believe that it would be a good method to continue.
